Warm Up to Cool R&B Legend Jeffrey Osborne
Jeffrey Osborne is an R&B/funk legend who rose to fame in the early 1970s as a member of the funk group Love Men Ltd. (later known as simply L.T.D.). Originally the band’s drummer, Osborne eventually became the band’s lead vocalist. Osborne stayed with the band for ten years before deciding to pursue a solo career.
It’s no surprise that Jeffrey Osborne became a successful musician, having grown up surrounded by a highly musical family. Jeffrey was born in Rhode Island as the youngest of 12 brothers and sisters, some of whom went on to have musical careers as well. Jeffrey’s father, Clarence “Legs” Osborne, was a jazz trumpeter who played with jazz legends such as Lionel Hampton and Duke Ellington. Jeffrey’s brother, Clay Osborne, is a singer and pianist; Billy Osborne, another of Jeffrey’s brothers, is a producer and songwriter.
Osborne has many musical honors to his name as a result of his career as a solo artist. Of his twelve solo albums, five have been certified gold and platinum. His career has spawned 25 singles, many of which have landed him high on the American Pop and R&B charts, as well as the Adult Contemporary chart. Osborne’s highest-charting solo pop hit to date is “You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song).” His highest-charting hit of all time is his duet with Dionne Warwick, “Love Power.” Osborne also has many songwriting credits to his name, including Whitney Houston’s hit “All at Once.”
Osborne has continued to record and tour through the past four decades. His vocals have also been featured in various television shows. He was featured in the theme song of the popular soap opera Loving in the mid-1990s, as well as the theme song for Kirstie Alley’s comedy Veronica’s Closet. In 2006, he appeared on the popular show Celebrity Duets, where he performed “On the Wings of Love” with Alfonso Ribeiro. In 2010, Osborne was featured on the season finale of The Bachelor, where he performed “On the Wings of Love” as the newly engaged couple had their first dance.
Osborne continues to achieve success, having recently received the 2014 New England Pell Award for Artistic Excellence from the Trinity Repertory Company. This award honors his lifetime musical achievements as well as the philanthropic work he has done in his home state of Rhode Island.
Osborne is currently touring across the U.S. and will be performing live in concert at Isle of Capri Casino Hotel Lula on October 4 at 8:00pm. General admission tickets are $25 and can be purchased by clicking here.
