Let's Hit the Road: Mississippi Destinations
Explore Mississippi from the comfort of your car. Driving means you can stop and go as you please while seeing plenty of cool places. Check out these three great Mississippi road trips.
1. Music and History
Begin in Tupelo celebrating the King. Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo. The cabin he was born in has been turned into a museum celebrating his life and contributions to music. It's a must-see for any music enthusiast.
Drive out of Tupelo and stop near the outskirts at the many ancient Native American mounds, like the Bynum Mounds on Natchez Trace Parkway.
End the day's drive with a night at the French Camp B&B Inn, a historic 1800s cabin turned bed and breakfast. You're in for a relaxing stay filled with plenty of history. The inn is located at 100 Robinson Drive in French Camp.
2. Foodie Road Trip
There's no doubt you'll eat many satisfying meals in Mississippi. Begin your foodie road trip at Walker's Drive-In on North State Street in Jackson. This diner features higher-end Southern-style cooking; think comfort food with finesse in a causal setting.
Afterwards, drive over to the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia for blues and brews. The historical site is one of the oldest juke joints in the country. Visitors speak highly of their visits with blues legend and cafe owner, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes. He's been known to play a song or two for visitors.
Circle back to Jackson and stop at Frank Jones Corner for tasty barbecue. It's located on North Farish Street. No need to rush; it's open late.
3. Haunted Mississippi Ride
Thanks to its role in the Civil War and with early settlers, Mississippi is known to have a few particularly haunted locations. In Madison, stop by the Chapel of the Cross Cemetery. Henry Grey Vick was buried here after being killed in a duel a few days before his wedding. Legend says Vick's fiancé haunts his gravesite wearing her wedding dress. Maybe you'll spot her sitting on the nearby bench.
Drive over to Vicksburg to visit the Duff Green Mansion. It served as a hospital during the Civil War. Today's stories claim the former patients still roam the property.
Next, take a ghost tour of Natchez, known as one of the most haunted cities in Mississippi. Be sure to stop by the old county jail, Forks of the Road and Kings Tavern, not to mention the many old antebellum homes.
