5 Creative Summer Grilling Tips
If warmer temperatures and longer hours of daylight has you craving food fresh from the grill, you won’t want to miss these summer grilling tips that’ll really step up your game! With a little know-how and a lot of practice, you are going to be a pro before the season is over. Is your mouth already watering for some flame licked steak or smoky ribs? Well, let’s get started and you can have the grill fired up before you know it!
1. Oil it up
Greasing up your grate a little will prevent lean cuts of meat from sticking and becoming a pain to flip and clean up after. Simply soak a paper towel in vegetable oil and grab it firmly with a set of tongs. Use the tongs to run the oil-soaked towel down the length of the grate for a simple way to grease up your grill with no mess.
2. Easy smoking for the beginner
If you dream of smoky ribs but don’t know the first thing about how to get started, we’ve got just the tip for you. Turn your kettle grill into a smoker with a few simple steps. First, soak your wood chips of choice in water for at least 2 hours, or overnight if possible. Fill two aluminum pans halfway with water and place them beneath where the meat will be grilling. Place coals on the other side of the kettle grill and get them hot. Once heated, place a handful of water-soaked wood chips on top. Now it’s time to put the meat on the grate over the water pans (on the opposite side as the coals). Cover the grill and be sure the temperature stays under 325 degrees. With a little practice and care, this tactic will smoke your meat just as well as any expensive smoke could!
3. Transform a cheap cut of meat
It’s not practical to have filet mignon every night, but some of the cheaper cuts leave a lot of be desired. This simple trick will transform your firm cut of steak into something worth bragging about. Simply coat your cut of beef with a layer of salt. Let it sit for about one hour. This lets the salt break down the strands of protein, for a super tender steak. But don’t throw it straight onto the grill, or you’ll get a mouthful of salt. First, wipe off the salt, rinse in cold water, and pat dry. You’ll be amazed by how this simple trick can turn your cheap cut into a juicy mouthwatering steak that tastes like it had a much more expensive price tag.
4. Place the fatty side of your meat toward the flame
Some people think that placing the meat fatty side up will make the fat drip through the rest of the meat, resulting in a juicier steak. This is not true, as the fat doesn’t actually penetrate the meat. Instead, placing the fat layer closest to the flame protects the inside of the meat from the heat, keeping it tender and juicy.
5. Whip up a DIY marinade
Sure, you can go to the store and pick up a marinade, but it’s more rewarding if you make one from scratch. And it’s super easy to do! Start with this basic recipe:
Whisk together 1/2 cup each olive oil and apple cider vinegar, juice of one lemon, 2 cloves of garlic, chopped, and 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. This basic marinade is a great starting point and is delicious on its own, but it can be fun to experiment by adding cilantro, cumin and hot pepper for a Tex-Mex version, or mixed herbs and Worcestershire sauce for a Mediterranean flair. You could even add soy sauce and fresh grated ginger for an Asian marinade. Experiment with a few different versions and find your favorite!
